Slack

Slack is where the conversation happens. dotby’s job there is narrow on purpose: make a pasted task link readable, and send you the handful of notifications that are genuinely worth an interruption.

It is not trying to move your tracker into Slack.

Set it up

Two steps, done by two different people.

1. An admin installs the app

   A workspace admin connects dotby to your Slack workspace once. This is an OAuth install — you approve it in Slack, and it is written to the audit log.

2. Each person links their own account

   Installing does not link anybody. Each person connects their own Slack identity to their own dotby account.

   This matters: without it, dotby cannot tell which Slack user is which teammate, so it cannot attribute anything or DM the right person.

   You can unlink yourself at any time, and an admin can revoke a link.

Link previews

Paste a task URL into a channel and it unfurls into a card instead of sitting there as a wall of characters.

Nota

Sharing a link never grants access. The card shows the task’s context to the room — the same trust model as pasting a screenshot: the person sharing chose the audience. Acting on the card is different: every button uses the clicking person’s own linked dotby account and permissions, so someone without access to the task can see the card but cannot touch the work.

Personal notifications

Slack delivery is opt-in and covers three things only:

• a task assigned to you
• a mention of you
• a status change

They arrive as a direct message, not as a channel firehose.

The narrowness is the design. Inbox is for everything that happened; Slack is for the few events worth pulling you out of what you are doing. If you find yourself muting the dotby DM, turn off a type rather than the whole integration.

Your quiet hours and digest settings apply here too — one set of preferences, both channels.

Ask it for help

Mention @dotby in a channel and it replies with a short summary of what it can do in your workspace. It is the fastest way to find out which capabilities are live for you without reading this page.

Rollout

Slack capabilities are released in stages, per workspace. Some workspaces have previews and DMs before they have the interactive pieces.

If something described here is not working for you, it is most likely not yet enabled rather than broken — the @dotby help reply tells you what is currently available.

Permissions still apply

Nothing about Slack widens access.

• A DM only goes to a person who can already see the thing it is about.
• Acting on a card, creating a task, or commenting always runs with the acting person’s own linked dotby account — never with the sharer’s.
• Anything created from Slack is attributed to the linked dotby account and bounded by that person’s role.

Turning it off

• Yourself: unlink your Slack account. Your DMs stop; nothing else changes.
• Everyone: an admin removes the installation. Previews stop, and no historical message is altered.
